Calcium chloride dihydrate appears as colorless crystals. Generally, commercial products are white, grayish-white or slightly yellowish crystals. It has a bitter and astringent taste and strong deliquescence. The relative density is 1.835. It is easily soluble in water. Its aqueous solution is neutral or slightly alkaline and has corrosiveness. It is soluble in alcohols and insoluble in ethers. When heated to 260°C, it dehydrates and turns into an anhydrous substance. Other chemical properties are similar to those of anhydrous calcium chloride.

Used as a refrigerant (such as refrigerated brine for refrigerators, refrigerated brine for making ice and ice pops), antifreeze, automotive antifreeze, and fire extinguishing agent. Used for melting ice and snow, as a flame retardant for the finishing and fine processing of cotton fabrics. Used as an adhesive and wood preservative. It is the raw material for manufacturing anhydrous calcium chloride. Used in wall painting and plastering operations to increase condensation ability. Used as a coagulant in rubber production. Mixed starch paste is used as a sizing agent. Also used in non-ferrous metal smelting. Used as a pharmaceutical.
