Myrtenol exists in eucalyptus oil and myrtle oil in the forms of free state and acetate. It has a grassy, woody and camphor - like aroma, and its acetate has a pleasant and fresh grassy aroma. It is a colorless liquid. The boiling point is 221 - 224ºC (101kPa). The relative density is 0.978. The refractive index is 1.496. It is obtained by epoxidation of β - pinene followed by catalytic isomerization.

As an edible spice, myrtenol can be used in flavors such as cola, lavender, and citrus, and it is an excellent blending agent and modifier. Myrtenol can also be used as an insecticide. Its acetate has a pleasant and fresh grassy aroma and can blend well with essential oils such as rosemary, clary sage, and lavender. Standard myrtle oil, with myrtenol as the main component, has a prominent purifying function, is mild and non-irritating, has obvious bactericidal effects, and has good astringent effects. It is often added to skin care products.
In the pharmaceutical industry, myrtenol is suitable for acute and chronic rhinitis and sinusitis, acute and chronic tracheitis and bronchitis, postoperative treatment of nasal function surgery, bronchiectasis, and chronic obstructive diseases. As a reaction intermediate, myrtenol can be used to synthesize fine chemicals such as myrtenal, perillyl alcohol, perillaldehyde, and perillartine.
