Ethyl formate is used as a solvent for nitrocellulose, cellulose acetate, etc., and as a bactericide, larvicide and fumigant for food, cigarettes, cereals, dried fruits, etc. As a flavor, ethyl formate can be used to blend the aromas of peaches, bananas, apples, apricots, pineapples, berries, etc., and can also be used as a spice for butter, brandy, sweet wine, whiskey, etc. Ethyl formate is also an intermediate for organic synthesis. For example, in the pharmaceutical industry, it is used in the production of anti-tumor drugs such as Fuxueding and vitamin B1; sodium acetylvinyl alcohol can be obtained by condensation of ethyl formate and acetone in a sodium methoxide-xylene solution, and ethyl 2-mercaptoimidazole-4-carboxylate can be obtained by condensation with acetylglycine ester and then cyclization with potassium thiocyanate. Ethyl formate is used in the production of drugs such as houttuynin, tongjingning, rehabilin, pyrantel, thiazidine mustard, leucogen, and anisodamine by total synthesis.
