Methyl acetoacetate is a colorless, transparent, aromatic, oily liquid. Its melting point is -80ºC, boiling point is 169 - 170ºC, refractive index (n20D) is 1.4190, relative density is 1.076, flash point is 158ºF (70ºC). It is soluble in water and most organic solvents, and is flammable.

Methyl acetoacetate has various applications in pesticides, pharmaceuticals, dyes, polymer stabilizers, solvents, organic synthesis, etc. As a solvent: it is a solvent for cellulose ethers and a component of the mixed solvent for cellulose resins; as a fungicide: it is an intermediate for hymexazol, dimethirimol, and ethirimol; as an insecticide: it is an intermediate for diazinon, coumaphos, and pyrimitate; as a herbicide: it is an intermediate for imazethapyr, and as a rodenticide, it is an intermediate for coumatetralyl, warfarin, etc.
