Cuprous chloride, chemical formula CuCl. Molecular weight 98.99. White crystal or cubic crystalline powder. Melting point 430 ºC, boiling point 1366 ºC, relative density 4.1425, refractive index 1.93. Soluble in concentrated hydrochloric acid, concentrated ammonia water and ether, slightly soluble in water (partial decomposition), insoluble in ethanol and acetone. The solution is easily oxidized in air and is green or brown. Stable to air and light when dry; turns green when there is a trace amount of moisture in the air, and turns blue to brown under light. Boiling in hot water will disambiguate to form cuprous oxide, copper and copper chloride. Its hydrochloric acid solution absorbs carbon monoxide to form carbonyl cuprous chloride. Preparation method: The copper chloride solution can be obtained by azeotrophing with fine copper wire or copper powder with clean surface. Uses: Used in organic synthesis, as catalysts and reducing agents in the dye industry, as desulfurizers and decolorizers in the petroleum industry, as well as in the production of organic pigments, preservatives, photographic paper, medicine, soap, fats and oils, nitrocellulose, pesticides, inks and fireworks, etc
