Octyl Aldehyde is Colorless liquid. Boiling point is 170ºC, melting point is 54ºC, relative density is 0.818 - 0.830, refractive index is 1.417 - 1.425, flash point is 54ºC. It is soluble in 2 volumes of 70% ethanol and oils. Acid value < 10.0. It has a fresh, pungent and strong fatty - wax fragrance, with a fruity jasmine note. The fragrance - retaining power is poor. When highly diluted, it has an orange - like aroma, slightly with a fatty honey - like note.

Octanal has a strong fruity aroma and, at extremely low concentrations, a pleasant sweet orange fragrance. In China, it is stipulated in GB 2760 - 86 as a temporarily permitted food flavoring. It is mainly used for blending citrus - type flavors. The dosage in beverages, ice - creams, candies, bread, etc. is 1.4 - 4.4 ppm. It can also be used as a fragrance in soaps and detergents. Octanal is also an intermediate in organic synthesis.
