Acetyl ketene is colorless, tear - inducing transparent liquid. The relative density is 1.0897, the melting point is - 6.5ºC, and the boiling point is 127.4ºC. The refractive index is 1.4379. It is insoluble in water but soluble in common organic solvents. It has active chemical properties and is prone to polymerization when left standing. It reacts with alcohols to form acetoacetates and with amines to form amides.
