Light yellow powdery or needle-like crystals. Melting point 112.5-114.5 °C. Soluble in 0.9% ethanol, 25% benzyl benzoate, 9% benzyl alcohol and most oily fragrances. It has a dry and sweet musky animal aroma. The intensity is weak but has a long-lasting fragrance.

Musk Xylene is a synthetic nitro musk. Musk Xylene is used in fragrances and soap to mimic natural musk. Studies suggest that formation of Xylene Musk adducts of rainbow trout Hb can be potentially used as biomarker of exposure.
