Colorless liquid. Melting point is -67.1ºC, boiling point is 172-174ºC, 73ºC (2.4 kPa), 58.5ºC (1.33 kPa). Relative density is 0.860 (20/4ºC), refractive index is 1.4445, flash point is 50ºC. It can be miscible with alcohols and ethers but insoluble in water.

It has a fruity aroma and a fresh and delicate fragrance. According to China's GB 2760-86, it is a permitted edible flavor. It is mainly used to prepare flavors for bananas, pears, citrus fruits and berries. However, it is rarely directly used as a flavor, but rather as a raw material for synthesizing flavors. For example, it is used to synthesize pseudo-ionone and citral. It is also used in other organic syntheses.
