2,3-Dimethylpyridine belongs to pyridine derivatives. Under normal temperature and pressure, it appears as a colorless or light yellow liquid and can be used as an organic synthesis intermediate and an acid-binding agent. 2,3-Dimethylpyridine is a commercial organic reagent. It has relatively good solubility in common organic solvents such as dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, and dimethyl sulfoxide, but has poor solubility in water.

Applications

2,3-Dimethylpyridine is a commercial organic reagent and is often used as an organic base and acid-binding agent in acylation reactions. The nitrogen atom in 2,3-dimethylpyridine can be oxidized to the corresponding nitrogen oxide under the action of an appropriate oxidant such as m-chloroperoxybenzoic acid.
