Zirconium oxychloride is a white acicular crystal. When heated to 150°C, it loses 6 crystal waters. At 210°C, it loses all crystal waters. It is soluble in water, methanol, ethanol, and ether, insoluble in other organic solvents, slightly soluble in hydrochloric acid, and the aqueous solution is acidic.

Zirconium oxychloride has a wide range of uses. It can be used not only as an additive for products such as raw materials for mordant dyes, mordants, color fixatives, deodorants, and flame retardants, but also as a stabilizer for oil field formation soil and a coagulant for industrial wastewater. The most important use of zirconium oxychloride is as an intermediate raw material for deep processing. Industrial-grade and high-purity zirconia and nano-ultrafine zirconia can be prepared by directly calcining zirconium oxychloride. Stable and semi-stable zirconia can be prepared after adding stabilizers. Zirconium oxychloride can also be used to prepare zirconium-containing chemicals such as zirconium carbonate, zirconium sulfate, zirconium nitrate, and zirconium hydroxide. These zirconium-containing chemicals have a wide range of uses.
