5-Methyl-1H-benzotriazole is Yellow or light yellow crystalline solid. Melting point is 80-82 °C (83 °C), boiling point is 210-212 °C (1.6 kPa). Soluble in alcohols, ethers and chloroform.

Applications

As a corrosion inhibitor for copper and copper alloys, this product is similar to benzotriazole (BTA). The actual commodity also includes 4-methylbenzotriazole ([29878-31-7]) or a mixture of the two, abbreviated as TTA. Benzotriazole corrosion inhibitors can form insoluble and stable complexes with cuprous ions and adsorb on the metal surface to form a stable and inert protective film with a thickness of only 5×10-7 cm. However, it is very stable in various media, thus protecting copper alloys.
