Alpha-Ionone is a colorless to slightly yellow liquid. It has a warm woody fragrance and a relatively strong violet aroma. When diluted, it gives off the fragrance of iris root, and when mixed with ethanol, it presents a violet aroma. Its fragrance is better than that of p-ionone. Its boiling point is 237 °C and its flash point is 115 °C. It is insoluble in water and glycerin, but soluble in ethanol, propylene glycol, most non-volatile oils and mineral oils. The natural product exists in acacia oil, osmanthus concrete and so on.
