Tetrahydrofuran, also known as oxolane, tetramethylene oxide, is an intermediate in the synthesis of the pesticide fenbutatin oxide. In addition, it can be directly used in the production of synthetic fibers, synthetic resins, and synthetic rubbers. It is also a solvent for many polymeric materials, precision tapes, and the electroplating industry. It is also used in the production of adiponitrile, adipic acid, hexamethylenediamine, succinic acid, butanediol, γ-butyrolactone, etc. In the pharmaceutical industry, it can be used in the production of carbetapentane citrate, progesterone, rifamycin, and as a pharmaceutical solvent.
