Alpha-ionone is a colorless or yellow liquid. It has a cedar-like fragrance. Soluble in ethanol, benzene, chloroform, and ether, and very slightly soluble in water. Boiling point: 237°C; flash point: 117°C, density 0.931. Refractive index (n20D) 1.4980. Specific rotation [α]23D +347°. Maximum absorption wavelength 228.5nm. 14300. Flash point 104°C. Low toxicity. Median lethal dose (rat, oral) 4590mG/kg. Irritating.
