Product Description

Isobutyric acid appears as a colorless oily liquid with a pungent odor similar to butyric acid. Its relative density is 0.949 (at 20°C), melting point is -47°C, boiling point is 152-155°C, flash point (closed cup) is 76.67°C, and refractive index is 1.3930 (at 20°C). It is easily soluble in water and miscible with ethanol, ether, chloroform, etc. Free isobutyric acid exists in rice, beans, and the roots of arnica montana.

Applications

The uses of isobutyric acid are similar to those of n-butyric acid. It is mainly used to produce corresponding esters. For example, methyl isobutyrate has an apricot fragrance, propyl isobutyrate has a pineapple fragrance, isoamyl isobutyrate has a banana flavor, octyl isobutyrate has a grape flavor, and benzyl isobutyrate has a strawberry fragrance and jasmine flavor. It can be used as a synthetic flavor and solvent. It is also used in the manufacture of varnishes and plasticizers. Isobutyric acid has some important derivatives. In industry, it is actually used as an intermediate for producing isobutyronitrile, which is then converted into isobutyl amidine hydrochloride. It is the raw material for the insecticide diazinon.
