Diethyl malonate is an important intermediate for the preparation of 2-amino-4,6-dimethoxypyrimidine. It can be used for the preparation of sulfonylurea herbicides such as bensulfuron-methyl, pyrazosulfuron-ethyl, and nicosulfuron. It is also an intermediate for sulfonamide drugs and barbiturates in medicine. It can also be used as a gas chromatography stationary liquid (with a maximum operating temperature of 40°C and solvents of benzene, chloroform, and ethanol) to detect ammonia and potassium. In addition, diethyl malonate is also a permitted edible flavor as specified in GB 2760-96, and is mainly used for formulating fruit flavors such as pear, apple, grape, and cherry.
