Phenylhydrazine is a light yellow oily liquid, with a melting point (m.p.) of 19.8 °C, a boiling point (b.p.) of 173.5 °C / 13.33 kPa, a refractive index (n20D) of 1.608, and a relative density of 1.0978 (at 20 °C). It is slightly soluble in water and petroleum ether, and soluble in ethanol, ether, chloroform, and benzene. It can volatilize together with steam and easily darkens in air. Phenylhydrazine hydrochloride [59 - 88 - 1] is a solid with a melting point of 250 - 254 °C (decomposition).
